Who are Scotforth Books?

Scotforth Books was set up by Carnegie Publishing Ltd, a commercial publisher of high quality local, regional and national history books. Over the years since 1984, when the company was founded, we have received an increasing number of enquiries from authors and organisations who either wanted us to publish their work commercially or were seeking advice about self-publishing. Many of these books were for personal or specialised markets (family or church histories, for example), but some would appeal to a small wider market for which they would need an ISBN. Our existing imprints are for specific genres of books (see below) and therefore not appropriate for the huge range of subject matters covered by self-published works, so in order to avoid confusion in bookshops etc we decided to create a new imprint with its own series of ISBNs. We chose Scotforth because that is the name of the area of Lancaster in which we are based (and it seemed doubly appropriate as our MD is a Scot!).
Scotforth Books offers a complete range of book production services and sound, honest advice at a fair price, to enable individuals and organisations to turn their manuscripts into high quality published books.
Carnegie Publishing Ltd
Carnegie was established in 1984 by Alistair Hodge, who is still the company’s MD. Our philosophy is that local, regional and national history should be written by the best authors but in a way that is accessible to the general reader. All our books are very well illustrated and beautifully produced, something else which is very important to us. We currently have 3 active imprints in addition to Scotforth Books, as follows.

Carnegie Publishing – our first imprint, now the umbrella under which we publish town, city, county and general UK history. All Carnegie books are substantial in scope and physical size (usually hardback) and the authors are highly respected in their field whilst still being very readable.
Palatine Books – designed for local interest, walking & leisure, and popular history, anywhere in the UK. These books are usually paperback and retail for less than £10 while still being illustrated and very attractively produced.
Crucible Books – for industrial and business history titles, produced to the same high standards as our other books, fully illustrated and usually hardback.
(You can view and buy books published under Carnegie, Palatine and Crucible imprints at www.carnegiepublishing.com)

We have been in business for nearly 25 years and are a small, family run company dedicated to producing high quality books both for ourselves and those who use our book design and production services.
